Progress in science is inevitable. At many points in history, it was thought that humanity had found out all there was to know about science. Yet, humanity has proven to be capable of continually exceeding our preconceived limits in scientific exploration. Science has always been a catalyst for change, uncovering new areas of knowledge for the betterment of humanity. Throughout the course of their research, scientists must adapt to the constantly changing scientific landscape and grapple with potential implications of their discoveries. This is the intent of ISYF 2018 - to give young minds a glimpse into the larger scientific community, to nurture the passion for science and the spirit of research within them, and, most importantly, to inculcate within them the ceaseless drive and courage to transcend scientific boundaries.
ISYF Sub Themes
That Eureka Moment
The oft-quoted “Eureka moment” is what many perceive to be the ah-ha moment that sparked off multiple revolutionary scientific discoveries. But there is much more to such innovative scientific discoveries than meets the eye. Are scientific marvels simply the result of a Eureka Moment, or are they the hard-earned fruits of labour, rigorous preparation and courage? Through the masterclass, participants will get to hear about the personal struggles of laureates, gain valuable insights with regards to their thought processes, and examine the myth of the Eureka Moment.
Is Science under Attack?
Science is a powerful force, transcending national borders and racial divides. It has yielded groundbreaking discoveries and inventions, revolutionizing the way we live. Despite science’s endless potential, it has often been held in check by human caution or fear. This phenomenon is especially apparent in light of recent developments worldwide. Modern science is at a crossroads - are we scaling new heights or are we gradually retreating to a culture that values science less? This year, distinguished Nobel Laureates and Eminent Scientists are invited to share their views on potential challenges faced by science, as well as highlight ways in which science could transcend established boundaries.
After the Prize
From a broader perspective, every breakthrough in the field of science has allowed humanity to gain a more comprehensive understanding of our world. The unearthing of knowledge empowers humans - as a whole - in our continuous effort in seeking improvements for the human race. At a more personal level, each rewarding breakthrough has impacted the scientists behind it in different ways. The dialogue aims to provide participants with a holistic and fresh perspective of how the breakthroughs have affected us all, as well as how they have transformed the careers and personal lives of the scientists.
